set policies for the effective management of the police force; recruit and appoint the Chief of Police, Deputy Chiefs of Police, and Civilian Command Members; direct the Chief of Police and monitor their performance; and<\/li><li>approve the capital and operating budgets.<\/li><\/ul><p>In addition, the Board is responsible for the creation of policies on a number of matters prescribed by the Act, any any other matters related to the police service or the provision of policing.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1562\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1562\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Who is the Board accountable to?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1562\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1562\"><p>The Board is accountable to both the community and to the\u00a0Inspector General of Policing.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Inspector General of Policing is a policing oversight body created under Ontario\u2019s\u00a0<em>Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019<\/em>. The Inspector General is responsible for ensuring policing is delivered adequately and effectively across Ontario and that police board members are complying with the Code of Conduct. The Inspector General exercises independent compliance oversight focused on ensuring police services, police service boards and board members, and special constable employers are complying with requirements under the CSPA for policing and police governance.<\/p><p>Members of the public can file complaints with the Inspector General concerning adequate and effective police service delivery, or allegations of police board member misconduct through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iopontario.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inspectorate&#8217;s website<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1563\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1563\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">How can I become a Board Member?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1563\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1563\"><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/90p15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Community Safety and Policing Act<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0establishes the number of Board members in direct relation to the population of the area it represents.<\/p><p>The Board elects a Chair and Vice-Chair at its first meeting of each year. The timing and election of the Chair is legislated by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/90p15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Community Safety and Policing Act<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>The Toronto Police Services Board is the only Board in Ontario to be headed by a full time Chair. This position carries a salary of $90,963. Despite the increasing complexity of the position, the salary has not changed since 1987.<\/p><p>City of Toronto Councillors are not compensated for their work on the Board; rather, this service is seen as part of their regular duties.<\/p><p>Since\u00a02006,\u00a0the remuneration for a citizen Vice-Chair\u00a0is a combination of an annual honorarium of $13,750 plus a per diem payment of $350 with a cap on total remuneration of $22,500 (representing 25\u00a0per\u00a0diem payments for attendance at board and committee meetings, and for required training days); and the remuneration for other citizen members is a combination of an annual honorarium of $8,750 plus a per diem payment of $350 with a cap on total remuneration of $15,750 (representing 20\u00a0per\u00a0diem payments for attendance at board and committee meetings, and for required training days).<\/p><p>Board Members are governed by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/regulation\/230408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">code of conduct<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>How to apply to be on the Police Services Board<\/strong><\/p><p>There are a number of ways you can become a Board member.<br \/>You can get appointed to the Board by<\/p><ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/public-appointments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>the Province<\/strong><\/a>,<\/li><li>the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.toronto.ca\/pa\/decisionBody\/27.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>City of Toronto<\/strong><\/a>,<\/li><li>being the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/city-government\/council\/office-of-the-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>City of Toronto Mayor<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or designate,<\/li><li>being a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/explore-enjoy\/history-art-culture\/mayors-councillors-reeves-chairmen\/city-of-toronto-councillors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>City Councillor<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and elected by your fellow Councillors to serve on the Board.<\/li><\/ol><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/90p15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Community Safety and Policing Act<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0sets out who will be members of the Board.
